Excited For

Films on the horizon that I can’t wait to see! Looking out about a year, these are the upcoming movie releases that I’m really looking forward to.

The Fountain (November 2006). Darren Aronofsky’s previous Pi and Requiem For A Dream are on my favorites list. If this film lives up to its potential, and the hype, it could be the next classic sci-fi flick. To raise the excitement level, for me at least, is the fact that Clint Mansell is scoring the film. His work on the previously mentioned Aronofsky films was brilliant, I recommend both soundtracks as well as the Requiem For A Dream Remix CD. A teaser trailer for The Fountain is finally online, check it out here (yeah, don’t worry, you’re fine, the site’s in Russian). Since Aronofsky is now set to direct an episode of Lost, don’t be surprised if the release of The Fountain is pushed to the same timeframe as his episode as a marketing technique (this would probably mean sometime around June, 2006). Get The Fountain comic here. The Fourntain continues to have its release date pushed out, this may be due to the studio’s love of the movie and wanting it close to awards season.
Zodiac (February, 2007). I like David Fincher’s visual style, couple that with the story of the never-caught Zodiac killer in the 60’s and 70’s (in San Francisco), and this could be a very gritty and suspenseful film. I’m sure fans of Seven will love this when it comes out.

The Science of Sleep (August 18th, 2006) and Master of Space and Time (2006). As you can probably tell by now I get excited for movies based mostly on who’s directing it. These two films directed by Michel Gondry, who created the virtually unequaled Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (written by the great Charlie Kaufman). Interestingly, these movies seem to share a common story element, that of an altered reality (much like ESotSM).

A Cold Case (2008). One Hour Photo’s shots were beautiful, so I’m hoping for the same in Mark Romanek’s next venture, a film staring Tom Hanks about a detective who sets out to solve the 27-year old mystery of who killed his friend. There hasn’t been news on this in a while…not a good sign.

Hellboy 2 (2007). Still a ways away, but del Toro surprised me (and a lot of others) with the first one. The title will be Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Don’t be surprised if this is pushed to 2008.
Sunshine (March 16, 2007). Danny Boyle’s ultracool 28 Days Later has me excited for his science-fiction Sunshine. Set fifty years in the future, a team is sent to help jump-start the dying sun after the previous crew disappears.
The Prestige (October 20th, 2006). With a resume like Memento, Insomnia, and Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan will have people lining up for The Prestige. Based on the novel by Christopher Priest, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play dueling sorcerers.
